Events: VFW and Gooney Birds Have Annual New Milford Carnival
Yesterday's rain gave way to today's great weather, and people showed out in
force for the annual New Milford
Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine
Corps League Detachment 434 (aka the Gooney Bird
Detachment) carnival. It will be held from August 26th through August 28th
(6-10PM on Friday, 5-10PM on Saturday), behind Boro Hall on River Road, raising
money for helping returning servicemen and women, providing scholarships for the
children of war veterans, and giving human contact to hospitalized veterans.

Events: Tories Arrive in River Edge
To give equal time to the other side, the Tories (or, as they sometimes prefer to be known, the Loyalists) came to Historic New Bridge Landing to celebrate the birthday of King George III on June 5th.

Events: Memorial Day 2010
Memorial Day, as usual, was celebrated all over the area this year, when veterans of our many wars were remembered. This reporter went to ceremonies in Dumont, New Milford, Oradell, and Haworth (River Edge was surprisingly closed-mouthed about any ceremonies they had, and this reporter was unable to attend the Bergenfield parade, which is usually the biggest in the area).

Events: Pinksterfest 2010
On May 23, 2010, the Bergen County Historical Society presented its annual Pinksterfest celebration, a recreation of the 17th century Dutch spring fistival. And, for the first time in years, they actually had a sunny day on which to celebrate.

Home and Garden: The Trees After the Storms, Part 2
The efforts of the Dumont Shade Tree Commission have resulted in the declaration of Dumont as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. The event was celebrated on April 24, as Dumont had an Arbor Day celebration. Baby white pine trees were given out, a definite help in replacing trees lost in March's storms (but note that variety is important to tree replacement; if you plant too many of the same trees at the same time, they are vulnerable to common disasters, or even just all dying of old age at the same time).

Undaunted by Tuesday's rain, the New Milford-Teaneck Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks' annual carnival opened on Wednesday, to the delight of all. New rides, new games, and an enthusiastic crowd proving once again that good causes and good times can mix very well.

Home and Garden: The Trees After the Storms, Part 1
Last months storms knocked down a LOT of trees in our area, to say the least. I met with Sally Tayeb of the Dumont Shade Tree Commission. She gave advice for home owners looking to replace lost trees, plus so much more information that this article is going to be published in parts. Possibly the most important news is that anybody who is interested in putting up new trees should show up on Saturday, April 24th on West Shore Drive between Madison and Dumont (it's just west of the train tracks, near the new CVS) between 1PM and 3PM, for their Adopt-A-Tree Arbor Day celebration.

Events: St. Patrick's Day Parade: Better Late Than Never
The St. Patrick's Day Parade through Bergenfield and Dumont was supposed to be held March 14th. The weather, however, did not cooperate. And the next week, well, many of the bands were performing at OTHER St. Patrick Day Parades. But, on March 28th, the parade finally went down Washington Avenue.
