Libraries: A Message from the Executive Director of BCCLS

News about local libraries

reprinted with permission from Robert W. White

Friends,

Our central site was without power from 10PM Saturday night until 2:30 Tuesday afternoon. Full Internet service was restored Wednesday morning, and you can again see our web page and catalog. The request feature for books and media was back again Thursday afternoon. During the power outage, which many of you experienced at your own homes and businesses, the public libraries acted as warming centers for some -- it was indeed very cold earlier this week, recharging stations for patron cell phones and laptops, and in many libraries a free WiFi hotspot for people to get in touch via the Internet. We're terribly sorry for any inconvenience our outage has caused you but all materials due from last Saturday through this Friday had their due dates extended so that you would not be charged fines for being unable to return or renew items. Some of you are still dealing with absence of power, flooding of some portions of your property and damage to and from trees.

Our hearts go out to you in this difficult time.

Libraries: Bergenfield Friends Holiday Party

News about local libraries Celebrating the holiday season, the Friends of the Bergenfield Library had their annual meeting on December 13, which doubled as a holiday party open to the general public. In spite of heavy rain, it went on (unlike the Bergenfield Holiday Party), and a great time was had by all.

Libraries: Oradell Free Public Library is Open Again

News about local libraries

For those who are not aware, the Oradell Free Public Library finished its renovations this fall; it's now open full time for all users. It took a bit more time than was expected, but the results were certainly worth the wait.

Libraries: Keep the Change

News about local libraries Everybody who borrows from libraries has had experience with paying fines. I've seen many complain if the fine is even 10 cents more than they figured. Here's a concept: Tell them to keep the change. It's not that big a deal. Pay in dollars, and say keep the change. As a donation. Or pay with a 5 or a 10. Yes, our tax money goes to our libraries. But it's not enough. Donations are always welcome, even if they're small. And, remember, if 50 people a day give an average of 50 cents a day, that comes to $25/day, or $150 a week ($175 if the library is open on Sunday). That's not an inconsiderable amount of money.
