Events: VFW and Gooney Birds Have Annual New Milford Carnival

Yesterday's rain gave way to today's great weather, and people showed out in force for the annual New Milford Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine
Corps League Detachment 434 (aka the Gooney Bird Detachment) carnival. It will be held from August 26th through August 28th (6-10PM on Friday, 5-10PM on Saturday), behind Boro Hall on River Road, raising money for helping returning servicemen and women, providing scholarships for the children of war veterans, and giving human contact to hospitalized veterans.

To give equal time to the other side, the Tories (or, as they sometimes prefer to be known, the Loyalists) came to Historic New Bridge Landing to celebrate the birthday of King George III on June 5th.

Events: Memorial Day 2010

Memorial Day, as usual, was celebrated all over the area this year, when veterans of our many wars were remembered. This reporter went to ceremonies in Dumont, New Milford, Oradell, and Haworth (River Edge was surprisingly closed-mouthed about any ceremonies they had, and this reporter was unable to attend the Bergenfield parade, which is usually the biggest in the area).

Events: Pinksterfest 2010

On May 23, 2010, the Bergen County Historical Society presented its annual Pinksterfest celebration, a recreation of the 17th century Dutch spring fistival. And, for the first time in years, they actually had a sunny day on which to celebrate.

Events: St. Mary's Carnival in Dumont

News about local events

Carnival season continues, this time in Dumont, with St. Mary's Church (on Washington and New Milford, with the new street construction complete) carnival running through Saturday, June 12th. There are the usual rides, food, and games, with an addition of Italian food on Thursday night, Filipino food on Friday night, and the drawing for their big raffle on Saturday at 10PM.

Events: New Milford/Teaneck Elk's Carnival 2010

Undaunted by Tuesday's rain, the New Milford-Teaneck Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks' annual carnival opened on Wednesday, to the delight of all. New rides, new games, and an enthusiastic crowd proving once again that good causes and good times can mix very well.

Events: St. Patrick's Day Parade: Better Late Than Never

The St. Patrick's Day Parade through Bergenfield and Dumont was supposed to be held March 14th. The weather, however, did not cooperate. And the next week, well, many of the bands were performing at OTHER St. Patrick Day Parades. But, on March 28th, the parade finally went down Washington Avenue.

New Milford honored its veterans in a small ceremony in front of Boro Hall. Veterans were honored with speeches, and, from the high school, musical numbers from the choir.
