Transportation: Bicycle Safety, Everybody's Concern

Getting from one place to another Bicycles are a fact of life. And, with new energy legislation coming, one way or the other, expect more and more people to start riding. It's certainly healthy; this reporter has been riding as a form of transportation for, well, let's just call it "decades" and leave it up to the reader to decide how many. In discussions with cycling police officers, both in the area and in New York City, and also with representatives of bicycle advocacy groups, it's a good time to review a few simple ways to reduce the chances that a bicycle ride won't end in the hospital and/or courtroom. And please note; an accident in a parking lot the other day shows that cars need to be just as mindful about bicycles as bicycles need to be of cars.

Events: Pinkster Fest 2009

News about local events

On Sunday, May 3rd, the BergenCounty Historical Society was supposed to celebrate the traditional Dutch festival of Pinkster (Pentecost). Simultaneously, a hardy group sponsored by the Hackensack Riverkeeper was building boats on Saturday, May 2nd, to launch in the Hackensack River on Sunday. Rain put a damper on both attempts, but they kept going the best they could. Pinkster is a celebration the end of cold weather and the beginning of the spring and summer warmth. This year, it wasn't entirely accurate. In spite of the light rain, the festival went on in the Campbell-Christie and the Steuben houses at New Bridge Landing in River Edge. The Demarest House did not have any activities, but was open for people to view the continuing restoration effort.

Restaurant Reviews: The Chicken & Rib Crib

Reviews of local restaurants

The Chicken & Rib Crib

387 South Washington Avenue
Bergenfield, NJ
(201) 384-1200

Always on the lookout for a new takeout-delivery place, I was interested in trying out the Chicken & Rib Crib when it first opened. It certainly has its positive points. However, if anybody remembers the "Soup Nazi" episode from Seinfeld you will understand from my description why I thought of it when I ate there: good food, but eccentric and inflexible management policy.
